President's Message - Maggie Fournier, DPM

Maggie Fournier, DPM

I will not surprise anyone by saying that health care is always evolving yet its core definition –restoration and improvement of physical health- will always remain consistent.

Over the past several years, access to health care has changed tremendously and technology has evolved as well. Telemedicine is now widely utilized for remote medical assessment. Patients can now book their appointment conveniently online, without having to speak to anyone. Health care had to advance towards a more demanding, technology-driven, consumer-oriented market. Yet, its definition of “restoration and improvement of physical health” will always remain.

I am an employee of a large hospital system. Our patients can now email their providers directly with questions regarding their symptoms, care, follow-up appointment, etc. Answering emails from patients is therefore one more task to do at the end of an already long day in order to assure patient [consumer] satisfaction.

What can I say? I am an old fashion doc who enjoys seeing her patients face-to-face, examining them with my hands, and getting to know them on a personal level. I cherish those moments of individualized interaction, as that is when I feel I matter the most and have the most impact on their health.

My perspective changed the other day. I had a “Pt Advice Request”, as they call it, in my in-box, waiting for my reply. I begrudgingly open the email and read the following to my greatest surprise: “Just wanted to let you know that I had immediate and total relief from my foot pain the moment I walked out of your exam room.  I enjoyed meeting you and want to thank you for caring and your expert treatment. You made an enormous difference in my well-being.”

And just like that, I am no longer dreading patient’s email. Health care evolves, yet stays the same. We still make a difference in a patient’s life, no matter what form health care takes, and that makes, an old fashion doc like me, happy.

Happy & Healthy Spring

AAPSM Stand Alone Meeting Won’t Disappoint!

Important Information About Stand Alone Meeting

Many AAPSM members have contacted the Executive Director regarding correspondence they have been receiving regarding our upcoming Stand Alone meeting at the Hyatt Centric in Fisherman’s Wharf in San Francisco September of 2018.  The AAPSM has been in touch with the Hyatt and they have issued the following statement that we would like to pass along to our membership...

“Our best recommendation we provide to clients, guests and friends is NOT to respond to such tactics as it only incites the Union further to see that they have gotten to you. When your members receive a call on a cell line, instruct them to block the number from future calls. For emails, they should mark the sender as junk or spam and then they shouldn’t see them anymore. This will help tremendously on the harassment.”

AAPSM Fellow Cary Zinkin, DPM Explains Why Feet Might Get Bigger With Age

Dr. Cary Zinkin
Dr. Cary Zinkin

Do feet really get bigger with age? Some strange facts end up being debunked, but this is certainly possible: "After years of wear and tear, tendons and ligaments in your feet may weaken. This can cause arches to flatten, which means feet get wider and longer. It won’t happen to everyone, though—people who are overweight, who get swollen feet or ankles, or who have certain medical conditions, like diabetes, are more prone. If it does happen, the average gain is about one shoe size by age 70 or 80," says Cary M. Zinkin, DPM, an AAPSM Fellow from Deerfield Beach, Florida.

Special Olympics Fit Feet Update

Special Olympics Fit Feet Update

AAPSM Past President and Global Clinical Director for Fit Feet Director Pat Nunan, DPM traveled to The Middle East North Africa (MENA) Special Olympics Regional Games which took take place March 14-23 in Abu Dhabi.  The events are being held at the same venues and facilities that will be used during the 2019 World Games. The MENA Region has a strong tradition of hosting Regional Games for its athletes and National Programs and this will be the ninth edition of the Regional Games. The Regional Games are not only a signature event for the MENA Region but also a major Test Event for the 2019 World Games. With more than 1,200 athletes from 33 countries competing in 16 different sports, the Regional Games will provide more excitement, spectacle and inspiration than most sporting events. They also require a great deal of “people power”, relying upon the involvement of 450 coaches and more than 3,000 volunteers.

AAPSM GREAT Sponsor KT Tape Announces New Products!

KT Tape is the nation’s bestselling Kinesiology Tape and we are the dominant leader in the category.  KT Tape continues to build the brand with consumers with our partnership with the USOC and Team USA and 15 Olympic and professional athletes.

KT Tape is now taking the next big step in building the Brand with a National advertising campaign.  KT Tape will air national advertising for the brand the next 3 months.  The ad campaign will air for a total of 6 weeks in March, April and May.  The advertising will air over 900 times with over 426 GRPs.  Seventy eight percent of active adults will see the ads on average 5.5 times each.  This is a powerful advertising campaign that is like other national brands that have seen advertising drive their brands to huge success and we anticipate the same huge growth the next 3-6 months.

The TV leverages our brand athlete ambassadors including Kerri Walsh Jennings, Jozy Altidore, The Bryan Brothers, Meb, and Marai.  Kerri tells her personal story of using KT Tape for the past 8 years training and playing in the Olympics.  The advertising also strongly communicates KT Tapes benefits to the consumer.  KT Tape provides pain relief and support and faster recovery from Pain.

KT Tape is poised to drive even stronger growth in 2018.  We are expecting unprecedented growth for the brand with the new advertising campaign.

For information on ordering KT Tape supplies, please contact Ed Terris directly at ed.terris@kttape.com

Note from the Education Committee Chair: Amol Saxena, DPM, Past-President

AAPSM members should take note, that this year’s Stand Alone Meeting in San Francisco will have many great speakers who have been president of their various societies, not only including AAPSM, but International Muscle Ligament & Tendon, International Shockwave, German Foot & Ankle, and American Foot & Ankle. You will recognize the names from literature, and you can meet and learn from them personally! This is a unique opportunity to exchange ideas and collaborate as we all treat similar problems. We will also have physical therapists who specialize in the rehab of foot & ankle disorders.
This is the first time we will have to limit attendance, so please assure your spot by registering if you are a member (& you can join now if not!) by June 15th. Note some of the workshops have additional charges. Everyone I speak to at our meetings remark on how unique and positive our meetings are. There is truly something to learn for everyone, even the experienced speakers!
Our members can also attend some regional meetings for shorter sessions, such as what we had in Connecticut and plan to have in New Mexico. We will also have a short (2 hour) session at APMA. Our attendance at the Munich meeting has been dwindling, so I am unsure at this time if we will continue. It’s a far way to travel but the information is impressive. They plan to have a non-surgical sports medicine “pre-day” this year so stay tuned. I also plan to participate in an international webinar on Fri May 11 (USA), May 12 (Australia). We should have the participation details soon.
Our education committee also works on updating the Fellowship exam questions and suggests articles to review, generally done by Fellows-in-training and future Fellows. We are happy to take suggestions and additional volunteers. Maggie Fournier has updated the committees, consolidating them, and we need members to participate. I look forward to seeing you in San Francisco this year, and Boston in 2019!

Detection of the Tram Track Lesion in the Ankle Joint: Comparing 3.0-Tesla Magnetic Resonance Imaging an Arthroscopy

Review by: Rizcion Dagani, DPM- AAPSM Fellow in Training

This article discusses the tram track lesion and presents the results of a Level III study investigating the reliability of the lesion’s detection with 3.0-Tesla MRI.

The tram track lesion is a talar cartilage defect with a “longitudinal trough shape” which the authors state “relates to a large osteophyte projecting from the anterior distal tibia.” The lesions have tended to be an incidental finding during ankle arthroscopy as they are not usually identified in preoperative imaging, including CT and standard MRI. The study aimed to show that the more advanced 3.0-Tesla MRI imaging would be effective in diagnosing the lesions consistently...
