As I write this column, the Bay Area is a smokey mess. Wild fires started by an unusual lighting storm are burning all over Northern California. Air quality is so bad, exercising outdoors is not advised. So, as I’m inside this weekend, I enjoyed Mark Cucuzzella’s lecture on the AAPSM PRESENT e-learning site. It was excellent! I encourage members to take advantage of all the great lectures on PRESENT.
2020 has been a challenging year -- not being able to easily socialize or take a spontaneous weekend get-away. I have been trying to do something different each week. Go on a bike ride or surf session after work with some friends. Little things can lift our spirits as it is easy to get down with the restrictions from the pandemic.
Break up the routine this week, keep positive and be vibrant!
Cheers,
Jimmy
AAPSM has partnered with PRESENT e-Learning to provide a series of up to 20 CME units in Sports Medicine. We are excited to announce that the AAPSM hub has launched and is now available by clicking here.

AAPSM Launches
YOUNG MEMBER MENTORSHIP PROGRAM (YMMP)
If you haven’t already done so, the AAPSM urges you to volunteer your expertise to young members of the AAPSM! Special thanks to AAPSM Fellow Ana Cafengiu, DPM, for coordinating the AAPSM Young Member Mentorship Program (YMMP) .The YMMP is a voluntary program intended to foster a cooperative one-on-one relationship between a young/new podiatric professional interested in pursuing a sports medicine practice with an experienced AAPSM Member in good standing of the AAPSM.
This unique program is open to AAPSM podiatry students currently enrolled in a college of podiatric medicine, resident members, or members in their first 5 years of practice.
The Mentor would be a current AAPSM member (with at least 5 years of professional experience and within 5 years of retirement) with a vested interest in sharing their sports medicine knowledge, and “paying it forward” as a role model to the young member.

The Concept of Sport Sampling Versus Sport Specialization: Preventing Youth Athlete Injury: A Systematic Review and Meta-analysis
Review by: Jeffrey Pentek, DPM
This article looks at the incidence of injury of youth in sports, comparing those that specialize in one sport verses those that are involved in multiple (sample). A systematic review was conducted of the literature looking at studies that reported injury rates on athletes between 7-18 years of age and specifying whether the athletes were sport specializers or samplers. 6 studies met the inclusion criteria. Involved studies used either a self-classification scale (comparing single to multisport athletes) or a 3-point specialization scale (comparing sport samplers, sport specializers, and “others” that were not able to be classified as true samplers or specializers)...
