Karen A. Langone, DPM from
Southhampton, New York Elected President
of American Academy of Podiatric Sports Medicine
At the American Academy of Podiatric Sports Medicine Annual Meeting last week in Seattle, Washington, the AAPSM is pleased to announce that Karen A. Langone, DPM, a sports medicine podiatrist in private practice in Southhampton, New York, was elected President. Dr. Langone received her Doctor of Podiatric Medicine Degree from the New York College of Podiatric Medicine. In addition to being a Fellow and President of the AAPSM, Dr. Langone is a Fellow of the American College of Foot & Ankle Orthopedics & Medicine (ACFAOM) and serves as the Lead Clinical Director for New York State Fit Feet Special Olympics International.
Elected along with Dr. Langone were: President-Elect- James Yakel, DPM, Brighton, Colorado; Vice President- Robert Conenello, DPM, Orangeburg, New York; Secretary Treasurer Paul R. Langer, DPM, Minneapolis, Minnesota; and newly elected Director – David Jenkins, DPM, Glendale, Arizona. David Davidson, DPM, Amherst, New York serves as Immediate Past President. Rita J. Yates, of Walkersville, Maryland, serves as AAPSM Executive Director.
“It is an honor to continue the Academy’s commitment to excellence in education and to further advance the understanding, prevention and management of lower extremity sports and fitness injuries while integrating new technologies and practices that are essential to a successful podiatric sports medicine practice,” stated Dr. Langone.
The AAPSM would like to thank AAPSM Fellows Dr.’s Marque Allen, Richard Bouche, Lisa Schoene, Doug Richie, and Amol Saxena for their outstanding presentations. The new panel discussion format was well received by those in attendance. The AAPSM was also pleased to present the following awards during the meeting: 2010 Golden Foot Award to Alberto Salazar, Richard Schuster Award to Stephen Pribut, DPM, the Robert Barnes Distinguished Service Award to Richard Bouche’, DPM and the AAPSM Outstanding Service Award to Mike Billish at Brooks Sports, Inc.

Special Thanks to Brooks Sports for Spectacular Event!
Those AAPSM Members arriving in Seattle early were treated to an outstanding event hosted by Brooks Sports, Inc. Brooks transported members to their facilities in nearby Bothell, Washington. Members of the Brooks staff- including Mike Billish and Rick Wilhelm- were on hand to greet our members and discuss firsthand the process involved in developing athletic footwear from concept to completion. Brooks also hosted the AAPSM’s 40th Anniversary reception followed by dinner. Outgoing President Dr. David Davidson congratulated incoming President Dr. Karen Langone. A special presentation of the AAPSM Outstanding Service Award was presented to Mike Billish of Brooks. Many AAPSM Past Presidents were on hand and received a token of appreciation from the Academy.

Calling on all members......
The AAPSM would like to once again call on all members to volunteer to
assist with the various committees currently serving your Academy. Listed
below are committees in need of dedicated volunteers. Please note the
Academy will be adding a committee dedicated to surgical issues along with
a committee addressing diabetes and nutrition. If you are interested in
assisting with any of these committees you are urged to contact Rita Yates
at ritayates2@aol.com and she will put you in touch with the committee
chairman: |
Education:
- Present lecture or workshop at an AAPSM sponsored meeting
- Present a case presentation at an AAPSM sponsored meeting
- Develop AAPSM instructional tools (PowerPoint presentations) on a variety of topics (i.e. ankle taping, etc.)
- Provide Journal Reviews for AAPSM Newsletter
- Submit case reviews for publication in AAPSM Newsletter
- Provide Pearl for AAPSM Newsletter along with responses
- Assist Credentialing Committee on updating oral/written fellow exam
- Work with chairman on reviewing podiatric sports medicine fellowships and current guidelines

Research:
- Submit research proposal and perform an original research project
- Serve on research committee to evaluate current/future proposals
- Publicize results of research in print, web, other (journals, lectures)
|
Public Relations:
- Serve as AAPSM Media Advocate
- Organize Speaker’s Bureau
- Establish task force for position statement guidelines
- Develop AAPSM information brochures for membership
- Select promotional items for distribution at trade shows, etc.
- Serve as liaison to various sports organizations (ACSM, NATA, Special Olympics, USOC, USATF, USAT, Youth Sports, etc.)
- Work with Past Presidents on history of Academy
- Organize social events at AAPSM sponsored meetings
- Awards committee – securing nominations for AAPSM special awards (Golden Foot, Robert Barnes Distinguished Service, etc.)

Membership Support:
- Work with Board to develop new technologies committee
- Develop practice management materials for office (forms, etc.)
- Work on setting up sports medicine practice start up site
- Develop Photo Library for membership use
- Participate on AAPSM shoe evaluation committee
- Participate in e-mail consumer response team
- Provide leads to corporate sponsorship committee

Student Chapters:
- Work on student handbook with appointed authors
- Assist local AAPSM student chapter presidents in securing volunteers for area events (screenings, fun runs, etc.)
- Work with chairman to provide AAPSM membership with student chapter updates
- Work with student chapter presidents on establishing an area on the AAPSM website and quarterly newsletter devoted entirely to students

Special Olympics:
- Work with AAPSM Executive Director and Fit Feet Global Director of Special Olympics, Inc., Healthy Athletes program in volunteering and providing foot evaluations and screenings at various SOI Games and events.
